A Travellerspoint blog

It's Been a While!

Well it's been a long time since I've been on here! Mainly because Will and I have spent the last four months working in Melbourne and saving for the next leg of our journey and nothing too exciting has been happening! We have both been doing ridiculous amounts of hours working in hospitality. Luckily I have been working with some really awesome people which have made the 60hr weeks bearable. We had a few famous people coming in to the restaurant like the gold Olympian - Kathy Freeman and the actor who played The Hulk and The Time Travellers Wife, Eric Banna. I actually didn't recognise him when he came in with his family and told him that he would have to be out the restaurant by 7.30pm as we had a lot of bookings coming in. You should have seen my managers face!

We celebrated Will's birthday early November by visiting a beautiful view spot of the out skirts of Melbourne. It was an amazing day for it too. Then we headed to the beach to get a sun tan and finished the day off with some tequila, cocktails and spicy food at a really good Mexican restaurant.

Mid November Jason, whos flat we're staying in, and I headed to the Melbourne Cup to see the horse races. It was awesome seeing everyone dressed up in their suits, dresses and hats. We bought a bottle of champagne, a couple of beers and put some bets on then sat on the grass and enjoyed the races. We didn't win any money but it was a great day out it was a shame Will had to work.

Last Monday I went skydiving with my friend, Bella. We flew up in a tiny little plane to 14000ft and then they opened the plane door, my heart was pounding by this point. Bella was first out the door and it was so funny to watch. One minute she’s there then in a split second vroooom - gone! Next it was me so we had to crawl towards the open door and I have to put my legs over the edge while the guy I’m with makes sure we’re in the right spot. That was the scariest bit hanging over the edge! Then we got the thumbs up and off we went, freefalling for a fair while which was so cool and such a crazy experience. Then suddenly he pulled the parachute and we were floating towards the ground. It was over so fast it seems pretty surreal looking back on it now. I got the video and photos for proof and have some pretty funny faces going on! So amazing I would recommend it to everyone!

Will and I only have two weeks left in Melbourne. It has been such a great city and I’m going to miss all the friends I’ve made but I am so excited to be travelling again and to put my rucksack back on! We are going to Japan for 3 weeks and plan to snowboard in Hakuba and Niseko. They are meant to have some of the best fresh snow in the world so we can’t wait for that! Then when those 3 weeks are over Will and I are going our separate ways. I’m flying to Cairns and he is coming back to Melbourne. I’m interested to see what it’ll be like travelling on my own but it’ll be a very sad day. Anyways that’s a small update. When we’re back on the road I’ll be writing more often on here again.

Working our way to Summer

all seasons in one day

Time is flying by! We've already been in Melbourne for nearly 2 months now. I can't believe it! I'm working in a seafood restaurant and Will is working a couple doors down in a winebar. We're doing a pretty good job of saving our money and think we will be heading off mid to the end of november hopefully. Although everyone here says we can't come to Melbourne and not spend the summer here but time is ticking and we have to move on really. There was a time when I was doing 57 hour weeks but luckily now I have 2 days off so it's better. Will is doing breakfast shifts so starting at 6.30am. His first breakfast shift he got woken up at 6.40am by his boss calling and asking where he was. His alarm hadn't gone off! He did, however, manage to make it to work for 6.45am somehow! Apparently his boss was pretty impressed with that haha! we both have really cool work teams and are enjoying what we're doing at the moment. I was meant to be going skydiving with my head chef, Bella, on Monday but the weather was awful so we couldn't go. Hopefully we can rebook it for sometime soon.

On the weekend I completed Tough Mudder with the guy who runs the boot camps I go to and his wife. It's a 20km course with 20 obstacles inbetween. It took us 3.5 hours but was so much fun. It included jumping into a pool of ice, apparently it was -38 degrees, swimming through mud, getting electrocuted and lots more. Will definitely do it again and will hopefully persuade Will to do it with me next time!

Life in Melbourne

all seasons in one day

Well we've been busy in Melbourne! Last Saturday we went to visit Ramsey Street where Neighbours is filmed. People actually live there and they have a 24hr security guard. They just close off the street when they are filming. After that we went to a park and fed some kangaroos. They were pretty big and pretty intimidating when they were bouncing towards us but after a while we realised they were friendly and just wanted fed. Lots of them had little roos in there pouches which were really cute! The weather was pretty good so we had a picnic and then went shopping for some interview clothes. We topped off the evening at Jason's parents house for dinner. Home made banoffee pie for pudding, what a treat!

Last Monday we went to a tv studio to watch 'The Project' a news programme with a comedy twist. It was really good and there were only like 12 of us in the audience. One of the hosts is a stand up comedian called Dave Hughes and he always came and spoke to us in the ad breaks. He was so funny! It was free as well and I'm telling you there's not a lot to do in Australia that's free!

Will and I have both had a couple trials in restaurants and bars. Wil has a part time job bar tending in a function suite and still looking for another job. I'm waitressing in a seafood restaurant at the moment and to be honest it's a bit of a shock to the system to be back to work so think I'll just leave it at that for now. On my second shift only Matt Lucas and Guy Pearce walked in! Oh my God I was in complete shock. I'm not going to lie I had no idea who Guy Pearce was but everyone else did as he's huge here in Australia. The funny thing was no one really knew who Matt Lucas was! They were really nice and at the end asked to see the head chef to say thanks and left a hefty tip. I was too scared to ask for a pic though!

It was my birthday yesterday and we both had the day off which was nice. It was a really sunny day and Will organised a nice picnic with a bottle of champers, smoked salmon bagels and birthday cake! He got me an ace frisbee as well so we played that for hours, such a good day!

Sightseeing in Sydney!

rain 5 °C

We've had a couple of long days in the city exploring, doing all the touristy things like Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge,  Botanical Gardens and Bondi Beach. On Saturday we went to an Aussie Rules game whih was awesome! Really good atmosohere and chilled out. We were supporting the Giants who unfortunately aren't very good at all but it was still really cool. Thy have some really weird rules like one of the many referees throws the ball in when it goes out. He doesnt just throw it in though he turns around, ducks the ball inbetween his legs and throws it backwards over his head. Really funny to watch. I imagine we will go to another game soon!

On Sunday we were lucky enough to be collected from the station by Mick and Joyce, my mums cousin and his wife. They took us out for lunch to a place called Altitude 1138 which had a beautiful view of the coast and Wallongoolloo (possible spelling error) and then on a lovely drive through national parks and along the coast. We stopped off to pick up some Apple Struddle and enjoyed it with a cup of coffee back at there lovely house.

We've spent today shopping, I found Topshop and let's just say I'm going to have to find a job as soon as I get to Melbourne after my large spending spree. We've been setup with mobiles and it feels weird carrying them about again! Off to Melbourne tonight on the over night bus. We thought we'd finished with them after South America!

Melbourne Bound

We are finally here! It seems pretty sureal at the moment now that we're in the place where we had planned to settle down in for a few months. Our friend Jason, who used to work with us in greece, picked us up from the station at 7am , dropped us off at his flat and then headed to work. Very kind of him to let us stay with him. The weather at the moment is just like Scotlands weather on a bad day! We've had drizzle, pouring rain, lots of clouds and it's freezing! Why we didn't head north to Cairns or something, where it's a bit warmer I have no idea! We're getting pretty settled in though. I've signed up for a boot camp 4 times a week and Will has a trial for a football team tonight! He's frantically running around the city at the moment looking for a decent pair of cheap football boots. Hopefully he manages to find a pair! I've just had an interview at a wine bar for some part time waitressing but don't think I'll go for it as it's very small and not many hours. It was very laid back and they said that if I didn't want to work there than Will could if he wanted to but don't think he will take it either. Anyways we're very happy to be here! I'm not sure if I'll have much to blog about but will keep you updated with anything that happens! celebration our melbourne arrival with jason and a bottle of bubbly!

In a Land Down Under

Our last day in Fiji was raining so I think we left at the perfect time! We met my mums cousin, Mick, at Sydney airport around midday and he showed us around the city and took us to some of the sights like Bondi Beach and Centennial Park. It was a pretty grey day with rain on and off, not what we expected for Oz at all but apparently the weather in Melbourne is even worse. Once Mick dropped us off at our hotel we hadna wander around the city and managed to get very lost going around in circles. We finally made it to Darling Harbour where there's lots of cool lively bars. Our hostel had a free bbq at night, what a great welcome treat! That was good and put us in the mood for a good few months in Oz. We're going to do some touristy things today like the Opera House and Botanical Gardens and maybe even squeeze in an AFL game if we can. Lots of sightseeing and then heading to Melbourne on Monday! We love it here already!Australia Stamps!!
